Little Tommy Borthwick was just hired by the Scranton School District as an English teacher. God help the youth of this town!
For those who don't know, Borthy was the subject of an intense investigation after he was removed from his student teaching position in Western Wayne. Some background - it is extremely rare for any student teacher to be removed from their position. In fact, if it happens, the likelihood of the applicant actually being placed in a payed teaching position is slim to none. Reasons people are removed from their student teaching positions include inappropriate behavior - such a swearing in front of the students or engaging in lude sexual acts - and /or not possessing the ability to complete tasks, form lesson plans, ie the basics of being a student teacher.
So then why was Borthy given an Unsatisfactory rating by his host teacher and then subsequently removed? Nobody knows. But hey, don't worry kids...he's coming to a Scranton class room near you, all courtesy of School Director Todd O'Malley and Company.
The real shame of this is that good teachers - people who have been waiting their turn for years (like Rep. Gaynor Cawley's daughter) - were passed over in favor of some 23 year old moron who was kicked out of his student teaching position for "reasons unknown."
I think the Scranton Times should look into this one...could be good for Doherty. O'Malley and DiBileo are basically life partners without all the hassels of a civil union at this point, and here comes this controversial kid that O'Malley gets hired in the school district.
If this is the case with Brothwick, how did he get a teaching certificate in Pa? You go for your certificate after graduation and do your student teaching prior to graduation. You cannot have a full time teaching position without the certificate. They have some pretty staunch rules about obtaining a teaching certificate. If you even have a DUI you are not eligible to obtain one (however, you do not lose it if you have a certificate and are arrested for DUI). I do not personally know Brothwick or Todd O'Malley, but some parts of this post just don't add up. Maybe that is why there has been no mention in the Times.
