PA Roads Need Wider Lines!

We have a problem here in PA – our roads, for many reasons. However, the issue I’d like to address today is the poor visibility of the road lines/markings. The lines are okay in the bright daylight, but at night or in poor weather, they are sometimes impossible to see. That’s because the road lines in PA only need to be four inches wide. And, when it comes down to it, if us drivers are having a hard time seeing road lines, then we are in much greater risk of having an accident. There is a bill that was passed by the House of Representatives and is currently in review by the Senate that, if passed, would allow for the appropriation of funds for a pilot program of wider lines on all PA interstate highways.
An initiative called Higher Highway Safety Standards (
www.highwaysafetymatters.com) is supporting this bill (Bill 815) and is asking PA drivers to write their local legislators to demonstrate the public’s interest in wider and brighter lines and their overall safety. On HHSS’s Web site, people can easily contact their government representative by clicking to the “Contact your Representative” section. The Senate will be making their decision in the next couple of weeks, so it is important for Pennsylvanians to get involved before the decision is made!

We have roads which haven't gotten more than a few shovels of coldpatch in 20 years, interstate highways that never seem to be finished with repairs, a state police force that turns a blind eye to the worst violators and you're worried about how wide the lines are? Come on! The lines are fine; we need some ROADS to go with them.

THe problem is not that simply it's not simply a matter of being wide, it's a matter of several other things one there are no emergency traffic releases on most pa roads if some gets into a accident on pa roads such as interstate 83 in York and Dauphin county they can hold people up between two exits for many hours. ON 83 in York county I was caught in a traffic tie-up between exit 14 Leder Heights and 16 Queen street for 3 hours because a tractor trailor had jackknifed and caused a pile-up, and beyond that the 3 hr pile up caused secondary crashes. All Along 83 south, if this had happened in another state the state troopers could have opened a gate and let traffic off onto a side road and have untied up traffic.
