Picolla for Governor?

What are the thoughts from Senator Picolla's home turf?  He may have the fundraising juice to run for Governor and the ability to garner committee votes, but does he have the personality to win the Republican Primary, or even to go up against Ed?

I think that the general assumption is that barring a drastic some drastic change, Rendell is going to be reelected next year.  I don't think that any of the candidates running will come close to beating.

Picolla seems like a nice guy, but I doubt that he has what it takes to to defeat a popular sitting Governor who has a natural geographic advantage.  The best that Republicans can hope for is a candidate who isn't so bad that he causes losses at the bottom of the ticket.

I like Jeff, but does he have what it takes to win?  No.   Do any of the candidates?  Lets run them down:

Piccola - Decent guy, once you get to know him.  Carries himself like a career politician, but isn't real approachable.  He turns people off at their first interaction.   Can he raise the money?  That has yet to be seen, but after he dries up the well at the Senate there is going to be nothing left.   And with all the money going to the special elections, I doubt that there will be much juice left at the senate when they are done.

Swann - Great guy, real entergetic and it seems that Holman still has it, that was a great online introduction video.   Granted, it looks like it was filmed in Swann's office with his staffers standing around.   It didn't really look like it was an actual event, and if it was, they really need advance.   However, most of PA is never going to pick up on the fact that it was staged.   Ok, so how about his ability?  Untested.  Unknown.  My prediction is that once he signs everyones football he is going to have nothing left to offer.

Scranton - Real Great Guy.  He has a handle on the issues and seems to be able to work a crowd.  Not as entergetic as Swann, but it seems that he has more to offer for the long haul.  He is a proven campaigner, has money, can raise money and has the experience and political savvy to put together a winning team in 2006.

Anyway, that is my analysis of the race.   Thoughts?

I think that Scranton's past may once again come back to haunt him.  But that was a long time ago, you may say.  But apperently he has been associating with some odd folks rather recently.  Supporting the 'Natural Law Party' canddiate for President in 2000?

This is the same party that think that we can ruduce crime by having prisoners practice transcendental meditation.

Now, don't quote me on this, but wasn't there a response to this on Politics PA awhile ago....something about Scranton saying that they guy that was running was an old friend and in actuality Scranton stumped for Bush....I think they had a picture of Scranton doing a speech for bush.......anyway, I can't blame a guy for his friends, if I was judged by some of my old friends I would be up the creek.

Yes, that was cleared up.  They were friends so he probably gave him a check or something.  He was stumping for Bush and there were pictures.  If this is the best they have to beat Scranton it is going to be an easy fight.

There's PLENTY on Scranton besides his endorsement of the Natural Law guy in 2000. It will be painful to watch the guru ads over again if Scranton wins the nomination. I think they'll be more nasty this time since he still apparently embraces this lifestyle.

On another note, Piccolla doesn't fair well on his own turf or anyone elses turf. Pro-choice Piccolla won't fair well with the conservatives in Central PA.

I know he says he's Prolife now. I think the only thing worse than a prochoice candidate to the prolife community is when a prochoice candidate pretends to be prolife to win votes.

Senator Piccola announced his withdrawal at the Central Caucus meeting.  The outcome of the regional endorsement meeting was overwhelmingly in favor of Lynn Swann.
